A lack of new releases with wide appeal doomed this Labor Day weekend to being a very modest one at the box office. The re-release of Spider-Man: No Way Home will top the chart with $6 million, a little better than our model predicted, with Top Gun: Maverick landing in second place with $5.5 million. National Cinema Day on Saturday looks as though it’s been a success, though, helping to lift Maverick by 16% compared to last weekend, Minions: The Rise of Gru by 15%, and DC League of Super Pets by a remarkable 32%.
